Magical New Experience, Which Returns Lights to Griffith Park for First Time Since 2009, Destined To Become a Wondrous, "Don’t-Miss" Holiday Tradition

This holiday season for the very first time, the Los Angeles Zoo changes stripes from a daytime adventure to a dazzling winter wonderland known as "L.A. ZOO LIGHTS", which electrifies guests as it transforms the Zoo's enchanting environment into a series of awe-inspiring animal escapades rendered in led lights, lasers, 3D projections, spectacular sets and interactive displays.  Open nightly from Friday, November 28, 2014, to Sunday, January 4, 2015, 6 to 10 pm (except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day), this magical new experience is destined to become a wondrous, "don’t-miss" holiday tradition.  "L.A. ZOO LIGHTS," bringing lights back to Griffith Park for the first time since 2009, is produced and presented by the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association and made possible with support from Councilmember Tom LaBonge, City of Los Angeles, 4th District.

"Griffith Park is accessible to so many residents of Los Angeles and occupies a special place in the hearts of many,” says LaBonge, one of the driving forces behind "L.A. ZOO LIGHTS" who wanted to provide Angelenos with a holiday activity to replace the beloved DWP Holiday Light Festival. ""L.A. Zoo Lights" is a new and different experience that people are going to love and cherish as they get out of their cars and walk through an amazing holiday wonderment with remarkable LED lights.”

An ideal family outing, meet-up with friends or date night, "L.A. ZOO LIGHTS"' self-guided 60- to 90-minute tour through select areas of the Zoo (while the animals themselves are asleep) introduces guests to a clever troop of animated LED "monkeys" commandeering an electrical power source hidden in an unusual holiday tree.  They swing through the entry plaza to guide an illuminated power line toward a giant electrical "outlet," attempting to plug it in.  Will they succeed?  YES!  The Zoo lights up, and guests follow the "monkeys" as they encounter an illuminated "Reggie the alligator," an origami "rhino," singing “elephants,” and a party of musical pink "flamingos" fronted by their DJ leader, to name a few.  Along the way, "L.A. ZOO LIGHTS" offers the only opportunity in Los Angeles to see real reindeer, lit by elegant "chandeliers," ("L.A. ZOO LIGHTS"' sole live animals), plus weekend-only visits with Santa Claus, perched atop a throne seemingly carved from ice, and an unexpected Hollywood ending featuring a red carpet bustling with paparazzi "animals."  Other special effects range from 3-D holiday-themed animations projected onto a group of palm trees and a "bird" who flies to a nest filled with golden disco balls, to freeway-driving "animals" on their way to the "L.A. ZOO LIGHTS" opening against a backdrop of Los Angeles landmarks and a group of giant "bullfrogs" made from 3,750 water bottles lit from within, plus much more.  Among the evening's sights are giant floating snowflakes, glittering light tunnels, animal cutouts and icicle lights.  Although the Department of Water and Power's wildly popular Holiday Light Festival is a bygone Griffith Park holiday tradition, and while "L.A. ZOO LIGHTS" is a completely different, well, animal, it pays homage to the Festival with a nostalgic nod to the past by featuring some classic pieces, including the Hollywood sign, the downtown LA skyline and City Hall.  Steaming hot chocolate and other holiday treats and goodies for sale are also part of the fun.

"L.A. ZOO LIGHTS"' techno wizardry is designed by art director Gregg Lacy and Bionic League, a live event lighting design company known for magnificent light shows for festivals, stadiums, arenas, clubs, and artists like Daft Punk, Kanye West and many others.

Daytime visitors to the Zoo can see the reindeer during regular hours, which are 10 am to 5 pm, along with a flurry of seasonal festivities and yuletide flourishes, plus weekend visits by Santa Claus.

Cornerstone Partners for "L.A. ZOO LIGHTS" are Edison International, 99 Cents Only Stores, Service Systems America and WeMo.

Donors include The Georgina Fredrick Children’s Foundation, The Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation, Paramount Pictures, the Rothbart Family, the Samuels Family, the Shultz Family and the Employees of the Shultz Steel Company, Mrs. Betty L. Sinkys, Simms Family Foundation, and an anonymous donor.

The landmark Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, drawing 1.6 million visitors each year, is home to a diverse collection of 1,100 animals representing 250 different species, many of which are rare or endangered.  Its lush grounds on 113 acres feature a botanical collection comprising over 800 different plant species with approximately 7,000 individual plants.  Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), whose members meet rigorous professional standards for animal welfare, the Zoo has achieved renown as an international leader in the preservation of endangered species and a conservation center for the care and study of wildlife.  Among its most popular habitats are the LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles), Elephants of Asia, Campo Gorilla Reserve and Rainforest of the Americas.  The private, non-profit Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA), which has supported the Zoo in partnership with the City of Los Angeles for more than five decades and provides funding for and operates seven essential Zoo departments, has 65,000 member households representing more than 240,000 adults and children.  As evidence of the Zoo's popularity, GLAZA attracts one of the largest membership bases of any cultural organization in Los Angeles.

Admission to "L.A. ZOO LIGHTS" is $13 for adults/seniors and $11 for children ages 2 to 12; tickets for GLAZA members are $12 for adults/seniors and $10 for children ages 2 to 12; children under age two 2 are free.  Purchase tickets online to attend during the first two weeks (Nov 28 – Dec 11) for the online-only Early Bird Rate of $8 each.

The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is located in Griffith Park at the junction of the Ventura (134) and Golden State (5) freeways.  5333 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles, CA  90027.  Free parking is available.  For additional information, contact (323) 644-6042 or visit www.lazoo.org

Knott's gets ready for Merry Farm as offseason refurbishments begin

    Image description
It's been awhile since we've taken a look at "Non-Haunt" Knott's Berry Farm so we stopped by to take a look at preparations for the annual Merry Farm event as well as to look at offseason work being done and progress on the new dark ride.

If you missed all of the info on this years Merry Farm event, click the link.

    Knott's Merry Farm

It seems that haunt just ended, in fact it had ended a mere 5 days prior to our visit, but the park was already in full swing getting ready for Christmas.
    Picture
For the most part it seemed much of the work is simple decorations like wreaths, but I'm sure there are even more decorations on the way prior to Merry Farm opening on November 22.
    Picture
    Picture
As far as Ghost Town is concerned, simple is the way to go.
    Picture

    No more hanging. =(
    Picture
    More wreaths
    Picture
    Ain't she purty?
    Picture
Even Panda Express is getting decorations. This is still the one food location in Ghost Town that sticks out. Would be a much better fit in the Boardwalk IMO. But the food here is actually decent.
    Picture
No trip to Knott's is complete without a ride on the Timber Mountain Log Ride.

The Bird Cage Theatre is getting decked out and will once again host the Gift of the Magi.

    2015 Attraction

As of this report we still don't know what the new attraction is going to be, only that Cedar Fair and Triotech will be announcing something next Tuesday at IAAPA. So we'll be sure to be on the lookout for that.

Still not a whole lot of visible work going on, but they are definitely working on the inside.
    Picture
    Picture
Some holes in the side of the building, you could hear them hammering away inside

Hoping that the Roaring 20's sign still being here is a good sign that it's not going anywhere.

    Offseason Refurbishments

I know we are lucky here in Southern California that we don't really get an "off-season" when it comes to theme parks, still, this is the time of year when parks will rehab trains and rides to get them ready for next years busy time.

Montezooma's Revenge is closed. This is still my favorite coaster in the park and it's great to see Knott's giving this classic the love and care it deserves. It's a dying breed but I love that the park has committed to keeping the ride and keeping it running great.
    Picture
    Picture
La Revolucion is still closed but the refurb they've been doing on this looks great. It appears to be very close to reopening.
    Picture
The new gardens look very nice and I sat here for awhile buying Season Passes for the rest of the family since it was the last day of the sale. Isn't technology awesome? =)
    Picture
Xcelerator was running 1 train. Seriously, when is the last time this actually ran 2 trains? It's been years since I've seen 2 trains running on it.
    Picture
There have been a LOT of rumors going around regarding Xcelerator and it moving to another park. While I love this ride (it's in my top 20) I don't think I'd be heartbroken if it got moved.

Just depends on what would end up in this spot. Maybe a modern re-make of the Soap Box Racers? I don't think any Knott's fan would be mad at that.
    Picture
Not really a refurb, but Black Magic is still standing, as were quite a few of the other Haunt mazes. I saw Daniel Miller walking around and was going to ask him if I could go through. But he seemed busy. =)
    Picture
Riptide is closed again. It went through a pretty major rehab, opened for a bit and then closed again.
    Picture
Pony Express is running 1 train
    Picture
Some work is going on near the Schoolhouse. Not sure what, but they are building "something".
    Picture
Ghostrider is also running 1 train. I took a ride and it was probably the best ride I've had on Ghostrider in 5 or 6 years. It's still not "1998 Ghostrider", but it's probably the best woodie in Southern California at this point.
    Picture

    New Sandwich Shop

Lastly, with very little fanfare, the popular Pink's hot dogs was replaced with an all new sandwich shop. While I really do like Pink's, it's hard to argue with the results of the new shop, I was very impressed.

It actually does fit the market place quite a bit better than Pink's did.
    Picture
A look at the menu, it all sounds good.
    Picture
It was rather warm so I opted for a cold sub, The Boardwalk Sub. It was very good and very filling. While the prices may seem high, with the Cedar Fair Platinum discount my sandwich was around $7. Pretty good for "theme park" prices. And even without chips or a side, it was enough to fill me up.
    Picture
That's going to wrap it up for today's update, we'll have another Knott's update in a couple of weeks when Merry Farm kicks off. We are trying to finalize our Holiday schedule now, it seems there are as many events for Christmas as there was for Halloween. Which is great!!

    The Future of EPCOT

    EDITORIAL

That means this is the opinion of one person, not a trip report or news article. Please keep that in mind as you are reading.
    Image description
Today we have a new feature for you, RD is going to have his own section of the site where he's going to have some opinion pieces, not just about Theme Parks, but pretty much anything he wants to talk about.

So welcome RD to the site, and enjoy his first piece about the future of EPCOT at Walt Disney World. - Gregg
I know I've been joking about the future of EPCOT - and the conversion of the World Showcase into movie-themed lands, but there is a reason behind this - yes, Disney is out for a ca$h grab, but haven't they always?
    Picture

    EPCOT World Showcase Lagoon

Let's face it: EPCOT failed. It tried hard. It changed. It evolved. And it has been a megabuck$ failure. Walt's vision for a permanent World's fair was brilliant - in the era when Worlds Fairs were big ticket draws. However, they have declined in popularity over the past 30 years, not the least helped by destination parks such as Disney, Universal and to a lesser extent large destination parks throughout not only the USA, but also the world. In effect: Disney killed the World's fair... by building a failing World's Fair.
    Picture

    United Kingdom Gardens

Everybody needs to remember the first letter of what EPCOT means: EXPERIMENTAL. Even Disney himself admitted that the process of what his vision for EPCOT would change and evolve - even from what he proposed for the Florida Project in 1966. He envisioned one thing, but knew that time would change everything, and he was right.

When EPCOT finally opened in 1982, it was a far cry from what Walt had proposed in 1966 - with very little actually retaining what he'd laid out. No big city, no major corporations building on Disney's property. Just about the only thing to actually come out of EPCOT was the enlarged Walt Disney World Monorail system - though even that has never been fully integrated & incorporated into the park - linking only two of the parks and three hotels. In the end, this too can be deemed a partial failure: Look at the number of buses that currently run around the parks, creating traffic & pollution - something the Monorails were anticipated to alleviate.
    Picture

    EPCOT Monorail

So Disney looked at EPCOT the park - and realized without some major changes, it would be a white elephant; a place where Gramma & Grampa and the parents would wander around - but not a full vision for families as intended. Some rides were built; some pavilions removed & exchanged with E-ticket thrills... but it still wasn't enough. Lacking the normal things a theme park needs in it (Water rides, flat rides, E-ticket coasters) has really been an anchor around the park's neck.
    Picture
The addition of festivals to help boost attendance has been a band aid on a hemorrhaging bleeder - a temporary fix to a permanent problem. The crowds have never really materialized even on the most optimistic views.
So the E in EPCOT is over. The World Showcase is getting their first non-country themed land; EPCOT is going commercial after 32 years of being stagnant. Am I for this change? Not really. There were better ways to do an upgrade to the park - there is still quite a bit of space on the property to add on attractions without losing the general flair of the World Showcase. However, I'm not the head of Disney Parks, either.

Maelstrom (and Norway) were a kitschy addition to the park to help draw people in - and admittedly it was a basic ride/attraction. Frozen WILL draw the crowds in. And the families. And the money to keep the park operating - and for that matter potentially profitable.
    Picture

    EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival

    Picture

    RIP Maelstrom

Big Hero 6 looks to be another blockbuster for Disney's film unit. And with this comes the lingering threat of a huge change: Which pavilion is next? How many will go the way of the dodo and convert to a Movie-themed, country-flavored attraction area? Honestly - I suspect that in one way or another the head of Disney Parks, the GM of EPCOT and Bob Iger have sat down and talked about this - and come up with a long-range plan for the evolution of EPCOT into this.
    Picture
    Picture
Pavilions such as Japan, Germany & France already have not only space to do so - but have show buildings & space already built that could be converted in a relatively quick time into attractions - or have space where new buildings could be added on without any fuss. As we have seen with CarsLand, Disney has tremendous opportunity to build theme areas in that are totally immersive and surround the plot of a film entirely.

In the case of some of these country-pavilions, the conversion would be quick & mostly painless:

    • Ratatouille in France, utilizing the yard to the east side of the existing structures
    • Japan has an outlet for space to the side & behind - Big Hero 6 attraction.
    • Germany has one of the largest unused parcels of land at EPCOT. An E-ticket ride bobsledding through the Alps? Matterhorn in its entirety would fit in that space with room left over - leaving us to the question of not IF but WHEN.
    Picture

    Japan Pavilion

EPCOT - 1982-2014. New EPCOT 2015-????? I enjoyed you as Disney intended - but it is time for a change -for better or for worse. We may not like what is coming, but it IS coming - and Disney is going to make it their own.

Legoland CA announces new attractions and gets ready for Holidays

    Image description
Last week we were invited out to Legoland California as they announced their new attractions for 2015.
The park announced both a new Star Wars "Death Star" Mini-Land and a Lego Friends Heartlake City area. Both will be opening in 2015. For all the information on those announcements see the full Press Release

Today we are going to take a look at the preparations that are already taking place for these new attractions as well as a look at preparations for Holiday Snow Days and Winter Nights

Later this week we'll take a look at the rest of the park as it's truly one of our favorites.

    2015 Park Additions

As we arrived it was a beautiful but warm day in Carlsbad.
    Picture
The park set up a nice little continental breakfast for the gathered media. Always nice to see after having a 3 1/2 hour drive in the early morning.
    Picture
The announcement was held in the nice air conditioned 3D theater.

The Force will be with you ... always.
    Picture
Lego R2D2 came out to join Peter for the announcement, we need to get one of these for any future Park Journey meets, because it's awesome.
    Picture
Next the Lego Friends came out to announce Heartlake City. I have to admit, I'm unfamiliar with the Lego Friends because my kids are a bit older than the target audience, but the area looks like it's going to be very well done and I think I'll bring my 7 year old Niece to see this when it opens. She'll love it.

    Picture
A close-up of Lego R2D2, be sure to visit him when you are at the park.
    Picture
    Picture
It looks like work has already started on the Death Star miniland, which if you are familiar with the Star Wars Miniland is next to the Hoth set.
    Picture
The park would neither confirm or deny that this was the spot of the Death Star Miniland, but it would make sense.
    Picture
Star Wars Death Star Miniland opens on March 5, just in time for Star Wars Days on March 7 and 8.
    Picture
The park also didn't announce where Heartlake City will be, but in looking at the artwork, it appears to be taking over some of the WaterWorks area, which makes sense because Heartlake City will also have a water feature.
    Picture
    Picture
We'll have much more on these two new additions in the months to come and we'll of course be there for the opening of the new Miniland in March.

Holiday Snow Days and Winter Nights

Preparations are also underway for Holiday Snow Days and Winter Nights, including an ice skating rink at the front of the park.

I've personally never seen Legoland at night so I'm hoping we'll get to see the event this year.

This is a really great attraction and it's great to see it get love every offseason.
    Picture
There's always something fun getting added to Miniland and this offseason it looks like the San Francisco Miniland is getting some attention.

Just hope they aren't adding a San Francisco Giants parade. =)

    Lego Movie Experience

Lastly, the new addition for 2014 was the Lego Movie Experience. This has been open since the Spring but we were unable to make it down. So we wanted to share with you this great walk-through.
