End of summer fun at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

    Image description
Last week we made our first visit to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk since 2009. It was kind of an "end of summer" quick trip to the Bay Area and SCBB was at the top of our list. Every time we visit this great park we always wonder why it took us so long to get back. A mistake we won't be making again.
Since our last visit the park has added the amazing Haunted Castle and a new coaster, Undertow. We've also got some POV video's of the Giant Dipper, Cave Train Adventure and the Haunted Castle. So sit back and enjoy one of the best parks around!!
    * Written by Gregg Condon
It was an absolutely beautiful day to be on the boardwalk
    Picture
After getting our ride wristbands our first stop was the newest coaster Undertow.

Since our last visit the park has started using MyBoardwalk Cards for arcades, games, and individual rides. They’ve replaced arcade tokens, cash, and paper tickets which makes it so easy to just enjoy your day at the park without having to carry tokens and tickets around all day.
    Picture
It doesn't spin as much as other spinning coasters but it was still a really fun ride.

A look down at the boardwalk
    Picture
The cars are a bit different than other spinning coasters, which is probably why they don't spin much.
    Picture
But it's a great addition to the park and everybody seemed to really enjoy it.
    Picture
The park was fairly busy for a Monday but due to the parks amazing operations we didn't wait more than 10-15 minutes for anything.
    Picture
The Haunted Castle was also new to us, the last time we were at the park was the last year for the old dark ride. We rode it on one of the last days it was open.
    Picture
    Picture
Full ride POV of the Haunted Castle, be sure to watch in HD!! =)
    Picture
No way we could ever come up to Santa Cruz and not take a ride on the Giant Dipper. Despite it's age it's still one of the best wooden coasters in CA (not like that's really saying much), but it's still REALLY good.

    Picture
Giant Dipper definitely has one of the more unique stations. The coaster was only running 1 train, but again the amazing operations insured a minimal wait all day.
    Picture
    Picture
Not the best Giant Dipper POV you'll ever see, but it was such a perfect day we couldn't resist.
    Picture
    Picture
    Well deserved
    Picture
Because it was so warm the longest wait of the day was the Log Ride. Which is funny because the beach is quite literally just behind me taking this picture. =)
    Picture
Any park with a Rock-O-Plane is A-OK with us!!
    Picture
The park has an amazing collection of classic flat rides.

Kiddie Coaster. We had the credit, but it's a fun one.

No trip to Santa Cruz could ever be complete without a ride on the classic Cave Train Adventure. Be sure to check out our on-ride POV below.
    Picture
    Ghost Blasters, always fun.
    Picture
The Skyglider also had a pretty long line. It was an amazing day for it.

    Oh yeah, fried stuff!!!
    Picture
    Now that's a big donut ...

Alright, that's gonna wrap it up for our look at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. If you'd like to learn more about the Boardwalk and their hours and events, you can click here. We can't wait to get back up north to visit again soon.

The Purge coming to Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood and Orlando

    Picture
Universal Pictures’ “The Purge” Lures Guests to “Halloween Horror Nights”
at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort,
    Beginning Friday, September 18

All-New “Terror Tram: Survive the Purge” to Deliver Unbridled Fear
    on the Famed Hollywood Backlot

All-New Immersive Haunted House to Unleash Purge Terror in Orlando
Universal City, Ca, August 17, 2015 – Beginning Friday, September 18, the annual Purge will commence at “Halloween Horror Nights” at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort as both parks debut all-new disturbingly-real experiences, inspired by Universal’s popular franchise film series created by writer and director James DeMonaco and produced by Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes.

Guests will attempt to survive the night as they are immersed in the film’s depraved world, where all crime is declared legal as part of the government’s annually sanctioned 12-hour Purge.

The “Terror Tram: Survive the Purge” experience at Universal Studios Hollywood will pit  guests against morally-compromised citizens, who take to the streets to cleanse the country of those deemed as less desirable, without fear of retribution. Recognizing that not all citizens choose to hunt during The Purge, a newly endorsed “Purge Party” will welcome guests to honor this proud national tradition by watching the night’s dramatic events unfold on large video screens set up around the famed Universal backlot – until the experience quickly turns into an unforgettable living nightmare.

Once aboard the “Terror Tram,” guests will find themselves at the mercy of affected vigilantes looking to annihilate people by the thousands. Strolling about the famed studio backlot – the very place where the horror film genre first took root – guests will need to rely on cunning wit, luck and speed to outsmart and outlive the anarchy unleashed by once average citizens now transformed into sadistic felons.
    Picture
“This year’s ‘Terror Tram’ preys upon the vulnerability of our guests as they wander the darkness of our world-famous backlot surrounded by iconic horror sets and consider the theoretic possibility of a real Purge experience,’” said John Murdy, Creative Director at Universal Studios Hollywood and Executive Producer of “Halloween Horror Nights.” “We consistently strive to raise the bar in delivering ideal scares, and the backlot at night infested with reprehensible characters is one way of truly scaring the living daylights out of our guests.”

Universal Orlando’s horrifying “Purge” maze will expand upon the incredibly popular and terrifying films and place guests in the midst of a chaotic Purge night where the tradition has commenced. As they navigate the maze, they will quickly realize that they are the targets for this year’s Purge. Guests will be hunted by dozens of masked vigilantes who will stop at nothing to purge as they are entitled.

“Building on the success of last year’s scare zone, this time our guests will live their very own ‘Purge Night’ within the confines of an all-new house experience,” said Michael Aiello, Director of Entertainment Creative Development.  “Just like in the film, guests will find themselves within arm’s reach of the most sadistic collection of killers imaginable. Their only want and need is to express their right to purge and purge they will."

Universal’s “Halloween Horror Nights” is the ultimate in extreme Halloween events. For more than 20 years, guests from around the world have visited “Halloween Horror Nights” in Hollywood and Orlando to become victims in their own horror movie. Multiple movie-quality mazes are constructed throughout the event, inspired by iconic slasher films, hit horror movies and television series or hauntingly real original stories. Numerous scare zones also infiltrate “Halloween Horror Nights,” designed to provoke an unrelenting sense of fear and terrorize guests as they navigate the darkness from one frightening maze to another.

Wrap up of D23 Expo Announcements

    Image description
Another D23 Expo has come and gone and over the 3 days lots of new great stuff was announced for the Disney brand. Not all of it was announced in the proper panel (still wondering how the Live Action panel got SO much stuff including the Star Wars Land announcements and the Parks panel got barely anything). But we got the news anyway.

Below we'll wrap up all of the announcements over the 3 days from the plethora of press announcements we received in our mailbox. It was A LOT.

We'll have our full D23 Expo report later this week after we catch up on everything else we've been neglecting.

    Disney/Pixar Animation

    Image description
SHAKIRA SHAKES UP “ZOOTOPIA” – International superstar Shakira is lending her Grammy®-winning voice to Gazelle, the biggest pop star in Zootopia, D23 EXPO fans learned via a taped message from Shakira today. Ginnifer Goodwin (ABC’s “Once Upon a Time,” “Something Borrowed,” “Walk the Line”), the voice of the film’s rookie rabbit officer Judy Hopps, saluted fans alongside directors Byron Howard (“Tangled”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph”), and producer Clark Spencer (“Wreck-It Ralph”). Hilarious new scenes from the film were unveiled, plus a tease of the all-new original song, “Try Everything,” written by singer-songwriter Sia and songwriting duo Stargate, and performed by Shakira. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia” opens nationwide March 4, 2016.

“GIGANTIC” TAKES ROOT – Things are looking up at Walt Disney Animation Studios – way up. “Gigantic,” Disney’s unique take on “Jack and the Beanstalk,” will feature music from Oscar®-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who greeted D23 EXPO fans in signature style—in song—alongside director Nathan Greno (“Tangled”) and producer Dorothy McKim (“Get A Horse!”). Set in Spain during the Age of Exploration, Disney’s “Gigantic” follows adventure-seeker Jack as he discovers a world of giants hidden within the clouds. He hatches a grand plan with Inma, a 60-foot-tall, 11-year-old girl, and agrees to help her find her way home. But he doesn’t account for her super-sized personality—and who knew giants were so down to earth? “Gigantic” hits theaters in 2018.

“MOANA” ROCKS D23 EXPO 2015 – Dwayne Johnson (“San Andreas,” “Furious 7,” HBO’s “Ballers”), who lends his voice to the mighty demi-god Maui in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana,” hit the stage at D23 EXPO 2015 this afternoon. Renowned directors John Musker and Ron Clements ("The Little Mermaid," "The Princess and the Frog," "Aladdin”), and producer Osnat Shurer (Oscar®-nominated Pixar shorts “One Man Band,” “Boundin’") shared dazzling early test footage and revealed plans for the film’s inspired music and the extraordinary team behind it. Tony®-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (Broadway’s hottest new hit “Hamilton,” Tony-winning “In the Heights”), Grammy®-winning composer Mark Mancina (“Speed”, “Tarzan” “The Lion King”) and Opetaia Foa’i (founder and lead singer of the world music award-winning band Te Vaka) blend their diverse and dynamic talents to help tell the tale of a spirited teenager who sets out to prove herself a master wayfinder. Foa’i capped the presentation with a show-stopping performance illustrating the magic of the movie’s music. “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016

    ·         Kilimanjaro Safaris – This popular attraction will be extended for a new nighttime adventure next spring, where guests will travel through the African savanna amid the magically extended orange glow of the setting sun and discover two species new to the attraction: African wild dogs and hyenas.

ScareLA - Two days of scary summer fun in Pasadena

    Image description
There was so much amazing stuff to see at ScareLA last week I've seriously started this update about 5 times trying to figure out just where to begin. There was so much packed into the 2 day event that it would simply be impossible to cover it all. And that's just talking about the panels, never mind the show floor and the fact we could have easily dropped some serious cash that would have impeded our ability to actually live in our house or eat food for the next month.
    * Written by Gregg Condon
As hard as it will be to break down the event, we're of course going to try and do so.

But first off, a HUGE thanks and kudos to the ScareLA team of Lora, David, Rick and Johanna for putting on an AMAZING event. Obviously these 4 couldn't do the event without 100's upon 100's of amazing volunteers who were great. In addition to going to "cover" the event we had an amazing time.
The entrance to ScareLA, not sure if we're in the right place. =)
    Picture
Before the event even began it was obvious this isn't your normal "Con" and we were among our people.
    Picture
The first panel of the event was a great Hatbox Ghost panel talking about how the new animatronic came to be.
    Picture
    Picture
The show floor was AMAZING and much more well organized and welcoming than the fan booths at this past weekends D23.

Below the slider show, which was awesome.
    Picture
Our friends at Six Flags Magic Mountain's Fright Fest had a great booth. Be sure to check out the details for our Fright Fest Event on October 2nd and get your tickets. (Shameless Plug)
    Picture
    Picture
Love just walking around the floor and seeing these guys.
    Picture
One of the coolest panels was with all our friends from Fright Fest, Queen Mary's Dark Harbor, Knott's Scary Farm and Halloween Horror Nights moderated by Rick West of Theme Park Adventure.

To see all of them just getting together and just talking about how they create their events is just great. Nothing was really announced other than some new scare zones at Fright Fest, but it was still one of our favorite panels of the weekend.
    Picture
One of the coolest things at the event was our friends at Evil Twin Studios showing off their Vault of Darkness. Be sure to check out our full walk-through below.
    Picture
More from the show floor. You could pretty much purchase everything you need to start your own home haunt from Fog Machines, Animatronics, displays, tombstones ... so much that we could have taken out a loan if they were available. =)

    Picture
The last panel on Saturday was for Halloween Horror Nights. We didn't have a great spot so don't have too many pictures, but you can check out the full release of what was announced here

We will say, we are very excited about Halloween coming back to HHN. The 2009 version is still my favorite maze they've ever done and I'm interested to see how they improve it for this year.
    Picture
Sunday Morning the first panel was for Queen Mary's Dark Harbor. Unfortunately this panel wasn't as highly attended as other panels which is a shame because the Ringmaster came out and put on an AMAZING show.
    Picture
    Picture
    The amazing Ringmaster.

One of the things that makes Dark Harbor so unique is their talent and the fact that they get a LOT of freedom, more than any of the other major haunts in Southern California. And the Ringmaster definitely brought it during the panel.

Be sure to check out the full press release regarding the Knott's announcement here and be sure you are following along because next Wednesday, August 26 we'll be at Knott's for the reveal of the rest of Scary Farm.
Lastly, we'll leave you with some pictures and our video of some of the amazing mini haunts from the event. Basically these were 2-3 minute walk-through's of a scene or two from some local haunts, or even a mini-show. Basically something to get you interested in these haunts to make you visit them in October, and it really worked because we can't wait to check these out.
