Six Flags Magic Mountain's Fright Fest makes big upgrades in 2014

We were invited up to Six Flags Magic Mountain's Fright Fest last Friday night. After announcing some new mazes in August we were very excited to see the 3 new mazes (Willoughby's Garden of Darkness, Vault 666 and Red's Revenge) as well as the upgrades to Toyz of Terror.
We are pleased to announce that all of the mazes were great, and even the returning mazes seemed even better this year. We'll review all of the mazes and scare zones.

Our night started off with the Fright Feast with the Willoughby's with a great performance by Michael Turco and the Fright Feast dancers. The show was pretty similar to last years show but is great entertainment all the way around.

The food was once again great and there are some new things on the menu this year including some home-made spaghetti that was pretty awesome.

Mazes

First we'll take a look at the mazes of Fright Fest and give our review of each. We'll start off with the new ones.

Willoughby's Garden of Darkness

Maze Rating: 6 out of 10

The maze is pretty much exactly what it says it is. It's a garden theme. if you've done Bite or Black Widow, the layout is pretty much the same, although it goes the opposite way. There was some great talent in the maze, although not really any of the effects that the newer Fright Fest mazes have gotten over the past few years.
With two other new mazes with lots of effects it's easy to see why this maze didn't get any real upgrades, but I'm anticipating they will come for next year. This is a really great concept and is a great compliment to Willoughby's Haunted Mansion.

Vault 666

Maze Rating: 8 out of 10

We got a walk-through of Vault 666 back in August so we were very excited to see the maze in action. And it really didn't disappoint. The effects are great, the pre-show was really great and the talent really did some great things in the mazes to complement it all.

Red's Revenge

Maze Rating: 10 out of 10

All we can say is wow. If this is the future of Six Flags Fright Fest mazes then the event is going to start rivaling the other events, and may eventually warrant a separate ticket like Haunt of Halloween Horror Nights. The maze was as good as anything you'll see at those two events, the talent was great and the storyline was definitely unique.
If we had one concern it's with the "pre show" as you couldn't really hear the introduction over the sound effects.

Toyz of Terror

Maze Rating: 9.5 ouf of 10

The ONLY reason this didn't get a 10 out of 10 is because it's not entirely new. But this is, HANDS DOWN, the best use of 3D effects I've ever seen in a maze. And yes, this includes the Clown mazes at Knott's Scary Farm and Halloween Horror Nights.

We were simply blown away that the park could take an existing maze, make some great changes and plus it that much from one year to the next. One thing we'd like to see come back is the final "show room" that they had a few years ago. We thought it was great.

Willoughby's Haunted Mansion

Maze Rating: 9 out of 10

Willoughby's is still one of the best mazes in the park. It got a major overhaul a few years ago and this year you can really see the great mix of talent and effects. I think they've finally got the timing down and it really shows.

Chupacabra

Maze Rating: 7 out of 10

Chupacabra is back this year, and this is easily the strongest it's been since been around. The talent was great, it seemed a lot Darker this year and it had a few new effects.

Total Darkness

Maze Rating: 8.5 out of 10

Total Darkness is back this year, but there are a couple of changes. Mainly, there is no Pen Light this year as it had the last couple of years. With it being in Magic Moments Theater it's really not needed as you can see all the way to the ceiling of the theater (due to fire code). While we don't think this is as strong as it was the first year in the Log Jammer queue (that one was truly totally dark) it's still one of the better mazes and plays on the fear of the dark quite well.

Aftermath

Maze Rating: 8.5 out of 10

Aftermath is the last maze in the park and remains one of the better mazes in the park and in Southern California. It's unique in that it's very wide open and spread out, the only thing that really comes close to being this open is the Terror Tram at Halloween Horror Nights.

Unlike Terror Tram though this maze still makes great use of fire bombs, which adds to the uniqueness of the maze.

The Fire Bomb makes this zombie look like he's on fire. I thought it looked really cool.

Scare Zones

One of the biggest improvements over the past few years (maybe even more than the mazes) have been the Scare Zones. Even though the park doesn't close prior to Fright Fest (meaning there are a LOT of kids in the park still) there really are no more "safe zones" in the park.

Demons Door

Scare Zone Rating: 9 out of 10

This scare zone was MUCH improved this year. Last year they had the fireballs but there didn't seem to be a whole lot of talent. That was fixed this year and this is a great "entry" scare zone for the event.

Zombie Xing

Scare Zone Rating: 8 out of 10

This is one of the newer scare zones which is a lot of fun. It's maybe a little small as it only stretches the walkway by Bugs Bunny World, but the talent in here is great fun and the set pieces are great.

We'd really like to see this scare zone extend all the way to where Superman goes over the walkway for next year.

One other thing we'd like to see happen is the utilization of the Whistlestop Depot into some kind of "Haunted Attraction". It could be really unique and really could actually make this ride have some ridership as it's usually closed for Fright Fest anyway. Maybe zombie conductors or something?

City Under Siege

Scare Zone Rating: 9 out of 10

While City Under Siege remains the most vibrant scare zone of Fright Fest, it did feel like something was "missing" on Friday night. It was a VERY slow night at the park so that may have had something to do with it. We'll be back at the event later in the month so we're anticipating this going up to it's normal 10 out of 10.

Ravenstitch

Scare Zone Rating: 8.5 out of 10

Ravenstitch is the new scare zone for this year and it's really great, although it's a bit small. It's basically from the end of the games to the Bumper Cars, which isn't a whole lot of room. It ends up getting overshadowed by the nearby Wastelands.

I think this could be a great scare zone but it might be better with more room, perhaps in Cyclone Bay (which currently has nothing) or the hill from Apocalypse to Roaring Rapids.

The Wastelands

Scare Zone Rating: 8.5 out of 10

The Wastelands is the one scare zone at Fright Fest that really supports the maze in the area. It really is an extension of "The Aftermath" and really looks great and has some brilliant talent.

Demon's Door has the potential to be the same compliment to a maze to Vault 666 if it would extend all the way to that area.

Exile Hill

Scare Zone Rating: 7 out of 10

Exile Hill stretches from Willoughby's Garden of Darkness and Willoughby's Haunted Mansion. Usually one of the stronger scare zones, it was definitely lacking this year. Kind of weird to say about a Halloween event, but it was simply "too" dark. You couldn't really tell the difference between guests and monsters. This one needs a bit more lighting to be successful.

Nightmares - A Twisted Fantasy

Scare Zone Rating: 9.5 out of 10

This is a scare zone that has had so much potential for the last couple of years, and we are very happy to say that this unique theme has finally payed off this year. The idea of a Black Light scare zone is really unique and this year the talent was incredibly awesome.

Last year they tried to extend it all the way past Viper and it just didn't work. This year it sticks to a small area that goes under Revolution and unlike Ravenstitch, the small area this scare zone is in really works to it's advantage. We simply had a blast in this area.

In addition to the Scare Zones there is entertainment and photo ops throughout the park.

The Waterslide picture spot has been replaced by Fright Fest, and the Monsters in Zombie Xing will even take a picture with you.

Voodoo Nights is back this year and while the singers, dancers and musicians are great, there's really nothing scary about singing Beyonce' songs (unless her sister shows up). We'd really like to see this get a more "Fright Fest" set list vs just the latest karaoke hits.

We'd also like to see the park get some kind of "Hanging" type show now that Bill and Ted's is gone. Maybe they should have just talked with Universal and moved the show to SFMM. We understand there was actually a script for Bill and Ted this year.

Shawn visits Wonder La Park in Kerala, India (Part 1)

Shawn from the amazing travel website Miles to Memories took a trip to India a few months ago. If you were following along with Shawn's Facebook or Twitter page you'll know that it was quite an epic trip.
Since Theme Parks aren't really something that he does on his site he sent us the following report from Wonder La, which is a pretty awesome looking park in Kerala.

We are going to split this into two updates as there is a lot to get to.

Earlier this year I traveled to Kerala, India as a guest of their tourism department along with 25 other bloggers. After the official two week tour of the state, I had a free day and was able to visit the Wonder La amusement park in Kochi.
Since I was visiting as a guest of the state, the park gave me the VIP treatment with front of the line access and my own personal tour guide! It was fantastic.

Wonder La was built in 2000 and has 55 rides and attractions equally split between a ride park and a water park. According to the General Manager, they rarely see any tourists and locals make up 99.9% of their clientele.

The rides park has five coasters, a number of typical flat rides, two 4-D theaters and a couple of other unique attractions. On the water side, there are several slide towers, two wave pools and even a water disco!

I really enjoyed the park since it had a unique style of theming and the staff was excellent. The ride selection is mostly off the shelf, however that didn't bother me at all.

My favorite part of my visit was interacting with the locals. Everyone was incredibly friendly to me. Most of the other guests were teenagers who were having a great time. Every time a ride or show would start they would start making weird noises. It sounds unappealing, but it made the experience so much fun!

My first stop of the day was the park's wacky worms which are located in a rock themed open building

After riding the kiddie coasters it was time to see more of the park. This is a dark ride, but I wasn't allowed to go on it. Woman & Children only!

The next coaster is called Vintage Tornado and it is located inside of this building!

It is a pretty standard Galaxi coaster.

I had fun and so did the people riding with me. The semi-enclosed location was interesting.

Next it was time to head up to ride the ferris wheel!

The ferris wheel gave great views of the entire park including the drop tower and spinning coaster.

Since I was on a time crunch we moved quickly through the park, but there is still time for monkeying around!

The park is home to a number of standard rides.

They have quite a few children's rides as well.

This was my favorite ride. It is a typical spinner, however they blast Bollywood music and everyone screams throughout the ride. A ton of fun!

The next stop was this unique ride.

It is called the Hang Glider and is a seated cable car ride

It pulls you back from the station slowly before returning you at high speed.

It was a lot of fun!

Next up was the park's spinning coaster. It is pretty unique and not too rough.

I'm not sure who built it, but they did a decent job.

Queen Mary's Dark Harbor unleashes the scares (Part 1)

We were invited out to Queen Mary's Dark Harbor last Thursday for their annual media night. Even as a huge fan of Haunt events, this was actually my first time attending the event even though I had planned on attending for quite a few years. This was the first year that circumstances beyond my control allowed me to attend.

We enjoyed the event so much that we ended up back at Dark Harbor on Saturday night to just attend as "non-media". And there is a really good chance I'll end up back at Dark Harbor at least one more time this year. The event is THAT GOOD.

I know a lot of people don't really believe in Ghosts, or that the Queen Mary is actually haunted, but going through the mazes on the ship as well as Encounters really takes it to another level that can't be duplicated at other haunts. The addition of the 3 off-ship mazes that were as great as any other events mazes really make this a great well-rounded event that shouldn't be missed.

We are going to have two updates for Dark Harbor, today we'll take a look at everything outside of the mazes, the "Freak Show" and the all-new addition for 2014, Encounters. On Wednesday we'll look at all of the mazes.

As we arrived on Thursday, we headed to the media check-in. Unfortunately Fall has yet to descend on Southern California and last week was probably the hottest week all year.

There was a nice reception set up for media as well as some entertainment and monsters out for us to enjoy prior to the event starting at 7pm.

The monsters were out early for us, you can see how great the make-up is in the light.

The Rhythm Coffin opened up the festivities, just a really fun band playing awesome songs.

What's an event without some awesome merchandise.

Just before the event opened we were able to head into the ship and experience the all new for 2014 ... Encounters.

Good!!!

On to Encounters ... The experience is $15 and you do have to sign a waiver, which always means a fun time is about to be had .

Personally I thought the experience was great. As somebody who had never done Dark Harbor or even The Queen Mary it was a great "intro" to some of the great haunted places of the ship.

There are also some "experiences" within those haunted places that play with your head, a LOT. I don't want to spoil anything, but it was very well done.

Kind of hard to see, but the the Propeller room, which is supposed to be pretty haunted. Again, the experience plays up the actual haunted places in the ship very well.

Each "Encounter" is hosted and we got "V" who was absolutely great. They do get away with some things during Encounters that you won't really see at any other event (language, etc) but overall we would recommend the experience.
If you've done any of the Haunted tours on the Queen Harbor then it may not be anything new for you. But it's worth the extra $15 if you are a Dark Harbor virgin.

If you'd like to do Encounters make sure you sign up early.

At 7:00pm the gates opened and Dark Harbor began.

The entry is kind of a Voodoo village which really sets the tone of the event.

Heading over to the Freak Show we are greeted by a 70ft fireball. It's VERY warm and can be felt throughout the entire event. Hopefully the weather will cool down before the end of October and it would be a welcome addition to the event.

Heading to the Freak Show which is a $5 up-charge if you don't have the VIP entry. But it's SO worth it. Was probably one of the funnest things we did.

Interactive Skeleton was a LOT of fun. I did take a flash picture (below). We talked to him for a good 5 minutes since there really weren't a lot of people in the freak show.

As it got darker you can see the great lights around the Voodoo village and the rest of the event.

We'll have more from Dark Harbor on Wednesday as we walk through all of the mazes and share more about the event.

Twisted Colossus Update #5

We headed up to Six Flags Magic Mountain's Fright Fest last night, and we are very happy to say that the event has once again stepped up it's game. The three new mazes were great, well themed and had some great "scares" in them.
We'll have our full Fright Fest update early in the week, along with our Queen Mary's Dark Harbor updates. But in the meantime, we wanted to bring you the latest on Twisted Colossus.

From the parking lot, doesn't look like much has changed on the ride since last week, but that's just what it looks like from here. =)

Inside the park, track has been completed from the brake run, the entire station, pre-lift and heading up the lift hill.

The blue track (toward the right) is heading up the lift hill, the green track (on the left) is the final run into the station.

The green track looks much darker on this side than it does in the parking lot.

Work has begun on the "Back Alley" portion, and unfortunately it looks like some trees are on their way out.

Guessing there will be a new store on the top level, but hopefully the trees that are still here will be saved.

First Track in place for Fury 325 at Carowinds

Carowinds, Charlotte , NC- Sept. 30, 2014 - Steel construction for Fury 325 begins as construction workers carefully place the very first piece of coaster track onto support beams. Scheduled to open in Spring 2015, Fury 325 will be the tallest, fastest giga coaster in the world. The first hill will stand 325 feet tall, as riders zoom along 6,602 feet of track the ride will simulate the flight of an angry hornet and reach a top speed of 95 miles an hour. Fury 325 is part of a multi-year expansion plan for the amusement park on the North, South Carolina border, additional 2015 improvements will include a new front entrance and improved dining and entertainment offerings.
