Colfax Haunted Hospital - Colfax, WA

Last night Matt and Rose went out to the awesome looking Colfax Haunted Hospital in Colfax, WA.

The Hospital has been featured on many shows such as Ghost Hunters and others.
    Some history on the hospital:

In 1893,  St. Ignatius was the first hospital to serve Whitman County.  The first patient was a pneumonia case. In the first month, ten were admitted. Three were released and seven remained. The first death was recorded in June of 1893, when F.E. Martin, a railroad employee, was crushed between railroad cars. He is just one of the ghosts known to walk the halls. The hospital was sold in 1968, but the building stayed open until 2003 and housed developmentally disabled adults in the bottom floors. All that remains now are the spirits of the past.
    Some thoughts from Matt:

We thought it was going be like a tour - but they basically just checked us in, gave us some equipment and basic instructions, then turned us loose in the facility

Here's some pics for you all to enjoy, you can find more information on the Colfax Haunted Hospital Here

Knott's Scary Farm Celebrates 50 Years of Scares on their Golden Anniversary

A couple of weeks back we made our visit to Knott's Scary Farm on the opening Sunday of the event. Our original plan was to visit opening night, and repeatedly using our Knott's Scary Farm passes, unfortunately life happens and we had to actually end up getting a refund for those passes. So I made what will likely be my only visit for 2023.

Slightly off topic, shout out to the awesome Guest Relations Team at Knott's for all the help in getting those passes refunded.

So let's head into the fog for an exceptional year of frights!
    Picture

Where it all began. Right here. Chills every time.

    Picture

But before we get into the scares, I was honored to take Clint from Thrillgeek on his first ever trip not only to Knott's Scary Farm, but his first visit to Knott's period.

    Picture

We did the Boofet, and this may be the best addition to it. EVER!

    Picture

After hitting a few mazes we spent some time admiring the awesome lighting and props of the event.

    Picture

The 50th display is something to behold. If you'd like a bit of history on Knott's Scary Farm, check out Ted Dougherty talking about the Scary Farm at this years Midsummer Scream below.

So many classic touches in just this display.

    Mazes

    Room 13
Room 13 is meant to be a kind of extension of the awesome Scare Zone, The Gore'ing 20's. In some ways it completely works, in a lot of ways it doesn't. It definitely reminds me of a maze one would have found at Dark Harbor a few years back, not like that's a bad thing at all. I did find it difficult to follow the story if I'm being honest.

I would have liked to have gone through more than once. But it was without a doubt the longest maze line we found all night, due to some, let's just say, interesting line control.
    Cinema Slasher
In any other year, Cinema Slasher would be the breakout maze of the year at Knott's Scary Farm. But this year with The Chilling Chambers, Cinema Slasher is regulated to second place for us. Reminds us a bit of the year both Dark Ride and Pumpkin Eater arrived at the event. Both great, but it's hard going up against what will be an all time top tier maze, at least for us.

All that said, Cinema Slasher is a very worthy replacement for one of my all time favorite scary farm mazes, has a lot of classic touches and references to the past (just look at the picture below for one). And I foresee this having a very successful run at the event over the next few years.
    Picture

    The GhoulTime Theater Lives!!

    The Chilling Chambers
To say that The Chilling Chambers is an amazing love letter to the history of Knott's Scary Farm, and my favorite maze of the year, is putting it mildly. I got chills walking through this maze. If you are a long-time fan of the event, this maze is worth admission all by itself. Just so many amazing call backs to the past.

But even more than that, it's actually a fantastic maze all by itself. Even Clint, who was making his first ever visit to the event loved it (although I think he liked Cinema Slasher a bit more). =)

You can tell the talent in here respects what the maze is all about, the designers had a lot of fun with it and first and foremost concentrated on creating a great maze, using the past as their inspiration.

I just can't say enough about this one, and I REALLY hope it's not a one-and-done maze as I really do want my wife to experience this maze next year when she can return to the event.
    Picture
    Our Overall Maze Rankings are:
    1. The Chilling Chambers
    2. Cinema Slasher
    3. Wax Works
    4. The Depths
    5. Origins: The Curse of Calico
    6. Mesmer
    7. Room 13
    8. Bloodline
    9. Dark Entities
    10. The Grimoire

You can see our maze walk-throughs from 2022 of the other mazes featured this year below.
Overall we feel this is a very strong line-up of mazes. Unfortunately with only being able to go through most of the mazes once this year we had to judge them by our one and only walkthrough.

This is the final year for both Dark Entities and The Depths, so we're definitely looking forward to what the event has cooked up for 2024.
The Hanging made it's grand return to Knott's Scary Farm this year and if you've seen The Hanging previously, you pretty much know what to expect. But it was fantastic and great to have it back.

Hopefully this isn't a one year thing, this is not the show that's creating controversy this year. =)

One of the big things this year is the 50th Legacy store, and we absolutely loved it.

    So many awesome photo ops

Fear Ranch Scream Park - A Killer New Haunt in Central Florida!

Last Weekend we attended the opening weekend of the brand new Central Florida haunt, Fear Reach Scream Park, located at Far Reach Ranch in Tavares, FL just north of Orlando.
    Picture
    Picture

The two main houses, Bloodline Barn and Grimoire Manor, both had outstanding sets, sound and lighting design throughout. Very well done and extremely detailed!

The third attraction, Chainsaw Chase, is exactly that - a literal maze in a field with chainsaw scare actors lurking around every corner. Simple yet effective and very fun!

    Picture

We also had a lot of fun at Dr Deviant’s Game Emporium, which included several small carnival type games, axe throwing, entertainment and a small bar. All of the employees were great there!

The other main bar, Pitchfork Parlor, had a ton of awesome drink options, and everything you want in a Halloween themed bar.

The local band, The Dismembered, and the scare actors in the Pitchfork Parlor were really enjoyable and we had a great time interacting with them.

Cheers to opening weekend at Fear Reach Scream Park! Now running every Fri and Sat, plus Halloween night from 7pm-12am, located at Far Reach Ranch in Tavares, FL.

Six Flags Magic Mountain Fright Fest 2023 - Highly Improved in 2023!

This last weekend we were invited out to Six Flags Magic Mountain to check out this years Fright Fest. After the success of Scream Break earlier this year, we were very much anticipating this event and hoping that some of the operational changes made during Scream Break would carry over to Fright Fest.

Unfortunately with some delays in the two new mazes, and them keeping the previous 6 mazes we feared that perhaps they'd stretched themselves too thin again. We were pleasantly surprised that this wasn't the case, and that many of the existing mazes have received significant upgrades and updated storylines.

So let's head right in and have some spooky fun!
    Picture
    Picture

Before the lights went out in the park, we were invited to a bit of a reception with some Fright Fest treats, which allowed us to get some daytime pics of decor.

    Picture

It was a delightfully chilly evening at the park, which just added to the spooky factor.

    Picture
    Picture
    Picture

Some fantastic photo ops in front of Golden Bear Theater.

    Picture
    Picture

Sadly this one had some damage, don't touch stuff!!

    Picture

Also managed to get a ride on the best hyper coaster on the west coast.

    Picture

At 7:00 it's time for the monsters to be unleashed! In our opinion, Magic Mountain has the best opening "scaremony" of any theme park haunt. It's just so fun.

    Picture

Unlike previous years, we only have video of the new mazes on our YouTube, but we'll be posting highlights of the existing mazes on our Instagram over the next few days!

    Picture

We really enjoyed Saw, the visuals were quite stunning!

    Picture

The other new maze for 2023 was The Conjuring, this reminded us a LOT of the Conjuring maze that was at the WB event a few years back, which makes sense.

    Picture

We absolutely loved this maze, so awesomely creepy with some tremendous effects.

    Picture
    Picture

While not technically a new maze, we did not get a chance to experience Truth or Dare last year, and based on the videos we saw from last year, this years maze is much improved. We absolutely loved it.

    Picture
    Picture

As far as returning mazes are concerned, Vault 666 has received yet another story change, and it's easily the best incarnation of this maze yet. If you'll remember, when the maze first started it was some kind of animal hybrid theme. The maze now features little resemblance in story to the original. So much so, we're shocked they haven't changed the name.

    Picture

Condemned House Party was back from Scream Break and was just as much fun. Although we missed the party going on outside of the maze itself. Not sure why they didn't bring all that back.

    Picture

Willoughby's Resurrected was back and received some nice upgrades inside the maze, which was great to see.

    Picture
    Picture

Sewer of Souls was also back and gave me my first, and so far only scare of the 2023 Haunt Season. So thank you!

    Picture

Aftermath 2 also got some great upgrades, and far less soldiers telling you to "go go go". Which isn't scary. Still, we'd love to see the neon lights of the nearby Dead Zone scare zone come into the maze to give it new life.

Let's check out some of the scare zones, which are, in our opinion, the best in the business.
    Picture

Nightmares is one of our favorite scare zones at any event

    Picture
    Picture
    Picture

We also got to see our dear Lorraine Lurane

    Picture

The Dead Zone mini scare zone/walk-through was back, and was full of monsters!

    Picture

The unnecessary scare zone heading up the hill is gone, but the lighting has remained. We love this choice. Better to use the talent to fill the other areas vs only having 1 or 2 actors here.

    Picture

The newest scare zone at the front of the park was also back, we love this area so much!

    Picture
    Picture

And of course, City Under Siege is back, and is definitely using the entire area this year, which is fantastic!

    Picture
    Picture
    Picture
    Picture
    Picture

Definitely the most popular scare zone at the park

    Picture
    Picture
    Picture
    Picture
There are two additional scare zones:
    • Terrortory Twisted - I'll be honest, we kind of forgot it even exited. Not sure how many monsters were in this area, but I'm almost thinking this area is not needed.
    • CarnivHell - Just like last year, we aren't sure why this is off to the side in Bugs Bunny World and not on the main walkway. Which means most people don't know it's there. We did walk through this one, and it's absolutely fantastic, but it needs to be out where people are.
      • That said, if they are going to keep this in Bugs Bunny World, they should have a couple of the rides running (without people) to give it that creepy carnival feel and creepy lighting.
    Picture

We'll leave you a look at some Fright Fest merchandise, which has been upgraded this year!

    Picture

That said, we'd really love some Magic Mountain specific merchandise.

    Picture
    Picture
    Picture

Just putting it out there, since our dear Innocence has now retired from Fright Fest, we'd be all over a Fright Fest shirt featuring that character.

    Picture

Some WB merchandise as well, which isn't surprising. Could we possibly see some other WB horror franchises come to Fright Fest in future years?

That's going to wrap it up for our review of Fright Fest 2023! We will definitely be back for more spooky fun before the end of the month.

Want more information on this years event? You can find all of the information here!
