RUMOR: Speed The Ride coming back to The Sahara Las Vegas

Update: the new owners of the Sahara have confirmed Speed: The Ride is NOT coming back. 😢

“He also shot down rumors. The renovations will not include a rollercoaster – in its final years the Sahara was home to “Speed-The Ride.” Also, NASCAR Café, which was home to the six-pound, two-foot-long burrito of “Man versus Food” fame, is not returning.

“That was a Sahara of a different era,” Hobson said.”

If you've been following us for awhile you'll know we don't really do a whole lot of rumors on this site. And we definitely don't do rumors sent to us from inside source at theme parks (yep, we actually DO have inside sources at theme parks, but we respect NDA's).

But this one doesn't come from one of those, it comes from Vital Vegas (give them a follow for great Las Vegas updates).
The long rumored name change of the Sahara back to the Sahara finally took place (it should have never changed in the first place). So that's a cool bit of Vegas history coming back.

We saw this last night and started talking a bit about Speed: The Ride.

A little history about Vital Vegas, they had a great source that had confirmed the name change back to Sahara.

Well this same source has also said Speed: The Ride is coming back.
For those who don't know, Speed: The Ride is a Premiere launched coaster that operated at The Sahara from 2000 to 2011. And it was all kinds of awesome.
Have also talked to our Team Park Journey Las Vegas Expert (RD) who said that despite the ride sitting out in the Vegas sun since 2011 it is in excellent condition. And while it would need some "TLC", it wouldn't take much.

In addition, the trains are not out in the open and are in fact in storage containers. But would also need some TLC of course.

So there it is, our big Rumor.

This is actually not the first time this rumor has come up, but the fact that the company that now owns the Sahara has reversed course on the name due to lack of enthusiasm, maybe, just maybe they'll try to draw some more people to that end of the strip with a roller coaster.

We can only hope, because Speed: The Ride was truly awesome!!

Now, if we could only get it without the OTSR's. =)

As a vegas local I’m really furious they are not bringing it back! In fact even if MGM bought it and put it in one of their casinos that would be perfectly fine with me. MGM owns Circus Circus and New York New York and those properties have coasters. Somebody needs to save it.

THERE IS NOTHING ON SAHARA AND LAS VEGAS BOULEVARD THAT WOWS THE CROWD. You can say it was from a different era but people are still drawn to the rides at the Strat Hotel. I mean hell make a fucking VR arcade for the new era. Sahara is going to need some kind of attraction currently because right now the only thing that Sahara house is some phony steakhouse Sahara is going to need some kind of attraction currently because right now the only thing that Sahara house is some phony steakhouse and then club 101 and I’m really curious to see how that one is going to last one we all are currently reading up on what’s happening with the chaos club. Also Sahara currently looks like a freaking warehouse on the Sahara side. Right now the new owners have a chance to risk making the Sahara brighter looking on the exterior. It’s still very bland looking. That’s the difference between yesterday‘s order and today. Today they just do enough to get by, back then they took greater risks and actually did better trying to wow the crowd. There’s just no way around it that Sahara is going to need an attraction. right now it’s just still very boring in there on the casino floor. You remodeled it renamed a club name and some restaurants and still just boring. At least the old Sahara had attractions like what and wild and the NASCAR café. That is what’s going to truly attract people. There’s just no way around it otherwise
