Midsummer Scream 2022 - The Return of Halloween in July!

Picture
It was finally back! After a 2 year wait with a couple of mini events sprinkled in between, it was back to Long Beach for Midsummer Scream!
Picture
The first indication on how much the event has grown were the ads in the lobby.

Our first stop in this update (not our first stop at the event) was the Museum of Halloween. Video walkthrough is below.

We really enjoyed this and can only hope it not only comes back in future years, but expands.

So much cool stuff to see (and for us older folks, remember)

Let's head to the show floor. We could have spent SO MUCH money here. They're going all in for Shaqtoberfest!

Cannot wait for the Haunted Hayride!

Lots of little Halloween touches everywhere

Pennywise, a friend to all

Even the Pizza Planet Truck got a Halloween makeover

The best investment at any Con, or Fair

They've even got stuff for those of you who love plants

I tried to think of the most harmless thing

So much unbelievably cool artwork. We got this for our oldest.

The event however wasn't without it's hiccups, as all large events have. Saturday was easily the busiest we'd ever seen the event. And the lines to get in, and for the HHN panel were outrageously ridiculous. But the panel itself went off without a hitch.
You can see our live-stream of the panel below, as well as our full breakdown of the HHN Panel here.
Picture
Saturday Night was the Deadly Disco, so we stopped by to join in on the fun!
Picture

So fun seeing everybody in their scary best getting down with some spooky music (once the DJ stopped playing Reggae and realized their audience was there to party down)
Picture
Of course, for us, the heart of Midsummer Scream is the Hall of Shadows
Picture
It really gets our happy little Halloween hearts ready for 2 months of scary fun

So much great stuff on display

Clown Town has been added to the list of SCV Haunts!

Some of the lighting in these mini haunts and displays is simply amazing. And they do all of this in about 1 1/2 days.

Until next time Midsummer Screamers!

MIDSUMMER SCREAM 2020 – TICKET PRE-SALE BEGINS FRIDAY,MARCH 6

Picture
The World’s Largest Halloween and Horror Convention Celebrates 5th Anniversary Expanding
Three Days From July 31 - August 2 in Long Beach
Picture
LONG BEACH, CA – Midsummer Scream, the world’s largest Halloween and horror convention returns to Southern California July 31 - August 2 for three days of Halloween thrills and horrific chills as the fan-favorite convention celebrates its 5th Anniversary at the Long Beach Convention Center.

The ticket pre-sale for Midsummer Scream 2020 begins Friday, March 6 at MidsummerScream.org, with 40% off General Admission Single Day and Weekend passes with discount code MSS2020. In addition, this Friday only, admission to Midsummer Scream After Dark - the official Saturday night party - is only $10 (regular price $25) with any ticket purchase!

Guests can also opt for the popular limited-edition Gold Bat Weekend Pass, which enables guests into Midsummer Scream an hour early on Saturday and Sunday before the convention opens to the general public; front of line priority access to panel presentations and attractions throughout the venue; a collectible lanyard and credential; a Gold Bat 2020 enamel pin; and admission to Midsummer Scream After Dark.

The underlying theme of Midsummer Scream 2020 is “Vintage Trick or Treating”, and all of the imagery, pageantry, and ghoulish good fun that comes with memories of October in years gone by. Halloween of yesteryear will be showcased throughout the weekend in multiple panel presentations, merchandise, and more.

With an estimated 40,000 attendees flocking to Southern California to participate in this year’s event, the decision was made to add a third day to the mix - a Friday night preview that will give fans access to all of the vendors on the convention’s sprawling show floor, unique limited-engagement programming specifically for that evening only, and a chance for Gold Bat and weekend passholders to pick up their credentials early.

“Last year, our continued growth dictated that we take over the entirety of the Long Beach Convention Center,” says David Markland, Executive Director of Midsummer Scream. “For our Fifth Anniversary celebration, the team agreed that it is time to make this a three-day event, which is exactly what we’ve done for 2020.”

Midsummer Scream is proud to announce the return of Southern California’s largest haunt events to the show for a weekend of world-class presentations, surprises, and major announcements.

These industry leaders include Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights, Knott’s Scary Farm, LA Haunted Hayride, Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor, and Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Fright Fest.

The iconic dark zone, Hall of Shadows, returns with the theme of Trick or Treat Forever! featuring
approximately 20 haunted attractions and displays, daily exhibitions by the Decayed Brigade slider team, and the largest experience CalHauntS has ever designed for Midsummer Scream, “Trick or Treat Lane” - a fully functional neighborhood adorned with vintage Halloween decorations where surprises and interactive fun abound!

With more than 300 artisans and exhibitors, Midsummer Scream’s show floor has become a shopping destination for fans of all ages, featuring one-of-a-kind artwork, props, Halloween accessories, clothing, and makeup supplies. This year’s powerhouse lineup of favorite vendors includes Bearded Lady’s Mystic Museum, Trick or Treat Studios, BlackCraft, Chicken Lips, and Immortal Masks. Also found on the show floor will be the beloved Paranormal Pixie’s Pumpkin Patch where kids and parents can participate in live entertainment and crafts throughout the weekend with the likes of Buster Balloon, as well as a performance stage where Mudd the Magnificent and others will mesmerize and entertain passersby!

Live entertainment abounds at Midsummer Scream, from the show floor to Theatre Macabre on the upper level of the convention center’s main concourse. Returning again to thrill guests are Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group, Force of Nature Productions, and more!

Midsummer Scream’s own film festival, The Screaming Room presented by HorrorBuzz, screens a variety of horror short film blocks throughout the weekend.

This is Midsummer Scream’s fifth year partnering with Kitten Rescue Los Angeles in presenting the Black Cat Lounge, where guests can mix and mingle with adorable felines roaming freely through a decorated play space. The Black Cat Lounge gives guests looking to adopt a pet the perfect opportunity to bond with their new little friends and give them furever homes.

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 6 at MidsummerScream.org. More news and information regarding
Midsummer Scream 2020 will be announced in the weeks and months ahead!

About Midsummer Scream
Midsummer Scream is presented by David Markland (Executive Director), Gary Baker (Executive Producer), Claire Dunlap (Supervising Producer), and Rick West (Creative Director). Its goal is to showcase the diversity of Southern California’s haunt and horror community as a welcoming beacon for fans around the world to converge on Los Angeles for a weekend of excitement, networking and non-stop spooky fun! Midsummer Scream 2019 - The Ultimate Halloween Warm-Up

Picture
Are you ready for Halloween yet? I mean, if we can have Christmas in July and all the Hallmark Holiday Movies that come with it, then why not Halloween as well!!

This past weekend was the unofficial kick-off (well, official for many of us) of the Halloween Season. And it came just when we needed it most!! We have SO much to get to from this years event, which was bigger and better than ever. So big in fact that there were about 10-15 things on our "must see" list that we totally didn't get to see.

But as you can see below, what we did see was all kinds of amazing. Let's head into the fog!!

Written by Gregg Condon
Welcome to Midsummer Scream
Picture
Before we get too deep into the in's and out's of panels and more I want to share something I posted on our social media the other day. A few thoughts on the experience of the weekend.

More than amazing panels, or fog, or mazes or aisles upon aisles of amazing things to spend all your money on, what I take most out of this past weekend is love.

People who have never been to any Halloween event or MSS are missing out. Halloween brought all of these people together. Some were there to see Theme Park panels. Others to see YouTube stars or just to shop. But all were there because we love Halloween and all things that go bump in the night.

Not once the entire weekend did I see anybody acting out, everybody was polite, considerate and amazing. And it was CROWDED. We talked with people we know, and met so many new people just standing around waiting in line.

None of the actual horrors that exist out in the world made it's way into Midsummer Scream. I know it may sound hard to separate the two, but it's not. It's all about a shared love of horror and Halloween.

And it comes down to the people in charge. They've helped to create a culture of love and acceptance that is at the core of the Haunt Community. And it's so amazing

With that said, let's first head into the Hall of Shadows
Picture
The Tiki's have invaded Midsummer Scream, and were an amazing entry to the area.
Picture
Picture
Tiki Tiki Tiki!!! How about some video of the Hall of Shadows featuring some of our favorite maze walk-throughs that you all need to visit this Halloween season.
Picture
One of our absolute favorite Haunts
Picture
We kind of split up our coverage this year, DSLR on Saturday and Hand-Held Gimble on Sunday. We wanted to make sure we captured all we could.
Picture
Picture
Some amazing displays were on, well, display. =)
Picture
Picture
Picture
Most of the Haunts were very short and gave a nice tease of what's to come. Some were longer and made you wonder how they got so much in a small space.
Picture
Picture

Our weekend consisted of a LOT of panels. I think two major ones on Saturday (and a Podcast) and three on Sunday.

Our panels started off with the AMAZING 50 years of The Haunted Mansion panel. And it was standing room only.

Our view for much of the weekend

The Midsummer Scream Dream Team
Picture
We were going to live-stream this but service was spotty at best. In hindsight I wish we would have recorded and edited everything together. Lesson learned.

Here is the full panel in three parts. It's truly amazing to listen to his talented group of people talk about an attraction they love so much.

Part One: Bob Gurr and Tony Baxter talk about their experiences with The Haunted Mansion and proof that the Hatbox Ghost was indeed there at the beginning.
Part Two features Don Hahn talking a bit about the Haunted Mansion movie (I really would love to get more in-depth with this some day) and Tom Morris discussing some of the in's and out's of the attractions construction.

Tom also had a panel on Sunday that went deeper into this that we sadly had to miss.
The last segment features Tania Norris in her first live-panel anywhere talking about her experiences with The Haunted Mansion and Walt Disney. It was truly a treat.
We could have listened to his panel for hours upon hours. And I know we weren't alone.

Later that day we attended the Halloween Horror Nights Panel where they announced Creepshow. It was ana amazing panel that we were able to Live-Stream.

Sadly the quality probably isn't up to our normal standards but here it is in it's entirety nonetheless.
Slideshow of all of the images from the presentation including Creepshow, Holidayz in Hell and the Scare Zones.

Bright and early Sunday it was time to spend more time in the Hall of Shadows prior to the Haunted Hayride panel.

They had an awesome display at the entrance of the show floor.
Picture
Picture
During the panel they announced Midnight Falls. We are seriously excited for the event this year.
Picture
The full panel featuring all of the info on Midnight Falls, some chat about the history of the event and a great Q&A session.

It sounds like they may have a few surprises in store for us that they didn't announce.

Immediately after was the panel for Queen Mary's Dark Harbor. But first we had to run downstairs and get a picture with some old friends.
Picture

Last and absolutely not least was the last panel of the weekend for Knott's Scary Farm.

The event that started it all did not disappoint and there are some treats in store for fans this year.
Picture
Dates for this years event, we'll see you there on opening and closing night for sure!! And a whole bunch in-between. Knott's Scary Farm passes FTW!!
Picture
Video of our live stream of the panel, this one seemed to turn out WAY better than the HHN panel.
No new mazes announced at Midsummer Scream (they'll do that on August 29th, and we will of course be there) but they did announce some new surprises for returning mazes.

One of our personal favorites, Dark Ride, will be getting two new rooms this year.

First up the Surveillance Room which is replacing the Air Duct Room in the maze.
Picture
And lastly, what's a Dark Ride that doesn't exit through the Gift Shop!?!?!
Picture
Two new characters are coming as well.

Any chances of getting those Castle of Chaos shirts for sale?
Picture
One of the coolest announcements of the entire weekend, that I think may be getting overlooked ...

Knott's will now be selling "graveyard pins" for retiring mazes. So at least one that will be available is for Infected, who's last year will be this year.

They will also be selling a "graveyard" that you can put your pins on.

REALLY hope they are going to release pins for some other retired mazes. What an awesome way to remember some of our favorites.
Picture
Just because Infected is going away doesn't mean it's not getting a couple of enhancements for 2019.
Picture
Picture
Picture
And that's a wrap!!
Picture
Never too early to start making plans for Midsummer Scream 2020.

We'll be there for sure!!
