Another D23 Expo has come and gone and over the 3 days lots of new great stuff was announced for the Disney brand. Not all of it was announced in the proper panel (still wondering how the Live Action panel got SO much stuff including the Star Wars Land announcements and the Parks panel got barely anything). But we got the news anyway.
Below we'll wrap up all of the announcements over the 3 days from the plethora of press announcements we received in our mailbox. It was A LOT.
We'll have our full D23 Expo report later this week after we catch up on everything else we've been neglecting.
SHAKIRA SHAKES UP “ZOOTOPIA” – International superstar Shakira is lending her Grammy®-winning voice to Gazelle, the biggest pop star in Zootopia, D23 EXPO fans learned via a taped message from Shakira today. Ginnifer Goodwin (ABC’s “Once Upon a Time,” “Something Borrowed,” “Walk the Line”), the voice of the film’s rookie rabbit officer Judy Hopps, saluted fans alongside directors Byron Howard (“Tangled”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph”), and producer Clark Spencer (“Wreck-It Ralph”). Hilarious new scenes from the film were unveiled, plus a tease of the all-new original song, “Try Everything,” written by singer-songwriter Sia and songwriting duo Stargate, and performed by Shakira. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia” opens nationwide March 4, 2016.
“GIGANTIC” TAKES ROOT – Things are looking up at Walt Disney Animation Studios – way up. “Gigantic,” Disney’s unique take on “Jack and the Beanstalk,” will feature music from Oscar®-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who greeted D23 EXPO fans in signature style—in song—alongside director Nathan Greno (“Tangled”) and producer Dorothy McKim (“Get A Horse!”). Set in Spain during the Age of Exploration, Disney’s “Gigantic” follows adventure-seeker Jack as he discovers a world of giants hidden within the clouds. He hatches a grand plan with Inma, a 60-foot-tall, 11-year-old girl, and agrees to help her find her way home. But he doesn’t account for her super-sized personality—and who knew giants were so down to earth? “Gigantic” hits theaters in 2018.
“MOANA” ROCKS D23 EXPO 2015 – Dwayne Johnson (“San Andreas,” “Furious 7,” HBO’s “Ballers”), who lends his voice to the mighty demi-god Maui in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana,” hit the stage at D23 EXPO 2015 this afternoon. Renowned directors John Musker and Ron Clements ("The Little Mermaid," "The Princess and the Frog," "Aladdin”), and producer Osnat Shurer (Oscar®-nominated Pixar shorts “One Man Band,” “Boundin’") shared dazzling early test footage and revealed plans for the film’s inspired music and the extraordinary team behind it. Tony®-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (Broadway’s hottest new hit “Hamilton,” Tony-winning “In the Heights”), Grammy®-winning composer Mark Mancina (“Speed”, “Tarzan” “The Lion King”) and Opetaia Foa’i (founder and lead singer of the world music award-winning band Te Vaka) blend their diverse and dynamic talents to help tell the tale of a spirited teenager who sets out to prove herself a master wayfinder. Foa’i capped the presentation with a show-stopping performance illustrating the magic of the movie’s music. “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
“RILEY’S FIRST DATE?” MAKES ITS WORLD PREMIERE – Pixar Animation Studios heads back inside the mind with an all-new short. “Riley’s First Date?” made its world premiere this afternoon at D23 EXPO 2015. Director Josh Cooley, along with “Inside Out” filmmakers Pete Docter (“Up,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and Jonas Rivera (“Up”), introduced the short, which revisits Riley, now 12, who is hanging out with her parents at home when potential trouble comes knocking. Mom’s and Dad’s Emotions find themselves forced to deal with “Riley’s First Date?” The short will be included as a bonus feature in the digital HD & Blu-ray releases of Disney·Pixar’s “Inside Out,” which will be available digitally Oct. 13 and on Blu-ray Nov. 3, 2015.
T-REXES SPOTTED AT D23 EXPO 2015 – Anticipation for Disney·Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” was amplified when director Peter Sohn and producer Denise Ream shared breathtaking sequences with fans, including never-before-seen footage of a trio of T-Rexes in action. In theaters on Nov. 25, 2015, “The Good Dinosaur” features Arlo, a sheltered Apatosaurus who finds himself far from home among a host of intimidating creatures.
DORY DIVES IN -- Ellen DeGeneres (“The Ellen DeGeneres Show”), the voice of everyone’s favorite forgetful blue tang, took a dip with D23 EXPO attendees this afternoon, celebrating Disney·Pixar’s upcoming film “Finding Dory.” Joining DeGeneres on stage this afternoon were Ed O’Neill (“Modern Family”), who lends his voice to Hank, a cantankerous octopus; Ty Burrell (“Modern Family”), the voice of Bailey, a misguided beluga whale; and Kaitlin Olson (“Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), who voices Destiny, a kind-hearted whale shark. Oscar®-winning director Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo,” “WALL•E”), co-director Angus MacLane and producer Lindsey Collins (co-producer “WALL•E”) offered new details of the all-new story, which reunites Dory with friends Nemo and Marlin on a search for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale? Also featuring the voices of Albert Brooks, Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy, Disney·Pixar’s “Finding Dory” swims into theaters June 17, 2016.
WOODY AND BUZZ MARK TWO DECADES – Pixar Animation Studios’ John Lasseter, who’s one of Pixar’s three founders, was joined on stage by several award-winning artists and filmmakers, including Pete Docter (“Inside Out,” “Up”), Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo,” “WALL·E”), Lee Unkrich (“Coco,” “Toy Story 3”), Josh Cooley (“Cars 2,” “Ratatouille”) and Galyn Susman (“Toy Story 4,” ABC’s “Toy Story OF TERROR!”). Celebrating 20 years since “Toy Story” transformed the animation industry and the art of storytelling, the Pixar team welcomed iconic two-time Oscar®-winning songwriter and longtime Pixar collaborator Randy Newman, whose Pixar credits include “Toy Story,” “A Bug’s Life,” “Toy Story 2,” “Monsters, Inc.” and “Cars.” Also joining in the celebration were writers Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (“Celeste & Jesse Forever”), who are part of the “Toy Story 4” team, though details of Buzz and Woody’s return to the big screen were mysteriously missing.
“Toy Story 4,” which will be directed by Lasseter and produced by Susman, is slated for release on June 16, 2017.
STAR WARS EPISODE IX DIRECTOR ANNOUNCED
ANAHEIM, CALIF. (August 15, 2015)—Today at D23, Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn announced that writer-director Colin Trevorrow will direct Star Wars: Episode IX, which is set for release in 2019.
While production won’t begin for a few years, Trevorrow is heading to Lucasfilm this year to begin working with artists and his fellow Star Wars directors. “Colin is someone I’ve been interested in working with ever since I saw ‘Safety Not Guaranteed,’” says Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. “The power of that film paired with the enormous success of ‘Jurassic World’ speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled filmmaker. We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe.”
Trevorrow states, “This is not a job or an assignment. It is a seat at a campfire, surrounded by an extraordinary group of storytellers, filmmakers, artists and craftspeople. We’ve been charged with telling new stories for a younger generation because they deserve what we all had—a mythology to call their own. We will do this by channeling something George Lucas instilled in all of us: boundless creativity, pure invention and hope.”
Star Wars: Episode IX will conclude the third trilogy of Star Wars movies that begins with Star Wars: The Force Awakens onDecember 18, 2015.

“‘Rogue One’ takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” says Kathleen Kennedy. “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”
Kevin Feige led off with a glimpse into the world of Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” featuring a video greeting by Benedict Cumberbatch, who stars as the title character, followed by a pre-production piece that offered fans a taste of the look and feel of the upcoming film, opening in U.S. theaters on October 26, 2016.
Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” marched into D23 EXPO with an introduction by its producer, Kevin Feige. To the delight of the audience, Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie showed up on stage to help Feige show never-seen-before footage from the movie. Before the footage rolled, Feige revealed that there was a special “Easter egg” for fans to find: it was aptly a nod to D23 EXPO.
Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.
The movie stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Frank Grillo, Tom Holland, with William Hurt and Daniel Brühl. Presented in Digital 3D™, Real D 3D and IMAX® 3D, the film, which is directed by Craig Gillespie and also stars Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Holliday Grainger, John Ortiz and Eric Bana, transports audiences to the heart of the action, creating a fully-immersive cinematic experience on an epic scale.

Favreau treated fans to a sneak peek of footage from the film, and each guest received a copy of the dramatic teaser poster following the presentation. The all-new, live-action epic adventure showcases Mowgli’s journey of self-discovery when he’s forced to abandon the only home he’s ever known.
Based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s 1967 animated classic, the film features state-of the-art technology that immerses audiences in the lush world like never before. “The Jungle Book” also features the voices of Bill Murray, Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito and Christopher Walken. Jon Favreau and Brigham Taylor produce and the screenplay is by Justin Marks. “The Jungle Book” hits theaters in stunning 3D and IMAX 3D on April 15, 2016.
Bailey welcomed Mia Wasikowska to the stage, where she thrilled fans with a preview of the all-new spectacular adventure,“Alice Through the Looking Glass,” featuring the unforgettable characters from Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories. Director James Bobin brings his own unique vision to the spectacular world Tim Burton created on screen in 2010 with “Alice in Wonderland,” in which Alice (Wasikowska) returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter. The film, which once again features Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and the voices of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall, introduces several new characters as well: Zanik Hightopp (Rhys Ifans), the Mad Hatter’s father, and Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen), a peculiar creature who is part human, part clock.
Joe Roth, Suzanne Todd and Jennifer Todd, and Tim Burton produce and John G. Scotti is the executive producer. The screenplay is by Linda Woolverton. Presented in Digital 3D™, Real D 3D and IMAX® 3D, Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” opens in U.S. theaters on May 27, 2016.
Bryce Dallas Howard joined Bailey on stage to talk about her starring role in “Pete’s Dragon,” a reimagining of Disney’s cherished family film. The heartwarming adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliott, who just so happens to be a dragon, “Pete’s Dragon” is directed by David Lowery, produced by Jim Whitaker, and executive-produced by Barrie Osborne, and also stars Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Robert Redford. “Pete’s Dragon” opens in U.S. theaters on August 12, 2016.
A surprise visit by Johnny Depp, who showed up on stage completely decked out as Captain Jack Sparrow, brought down the house and thrilled fans at Sean Bailey’s presentation of the next exciting film in the “Pirates of the Caribbean “ franchise, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.”
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil's Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea...including him. Captain Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Wow, that's a lot of great stuff coming your way over the next few years. So what are you most excited about? Be sure to let us know below.
Renée ran the inaugural Rebel Challenge/Star Wars Half Marathon back in January and was nice enough to send us the following pictures and a review.
As a reminder, if you'd like to run the Avengers Half Marathon or any of the races that weekend, registration opens TODAY. So that means, register TODAY!!! =)
First, a few shots from the Expo, which is pretty much a typical RunDisney Expo but with some cool Star Wars signage.
We;ll start off with the 10k.
One of the best things about the race was the creative Star Wars themed costumes that people came up with.
There was a lack of characters along both the 10k and half courses, and when there were any, the lines were quite long. I didn't stop for anyone during the 10k.
They did have several Jedi cheering us on in some areas.
After the 10k
Moving on to the next morning and the Half Marathon.
Character lines were a little shorter since I was in an earlier corral for the half, so I stopped at a few.
Luke and Leia were appearing where Chewbacca was the previous day.
The lines for Chewbacca and Darth Vader were still too long for me to justify waiting.
Besides the disney parks, the best part of the course was a stretch of road where Star Wars fans appeared in some awesome costumes.
Finish line and of course the medals.
Thanks again to Renée for sending us these amazing pictures. It's nice to see Disney switching up the courses a bit and hopefully they'll have more characters out for the next race. Maybe even some from the new Star Wars movie!!
As a reminder, if you'd like to run any of the RunDisney races or other Theme Park Races, be sure to check out our article "Please Run Through the Theme Park at All Times". It's a great resource for upcoming races and all of our race reviews are added there as well. We are always adding new races to the article.
Being a runner and a lover of Disney, it's only natural that running a Disney race is top on my list. I've now run 5 different races at Disneyland and have thoroughly enjoyed them all.
I hadn't really planned on running the Avengers Half because the price tag $195 was a bit much for a half marathon considering full marathons are generally less than that.
As luck would have it, a friend was offering her bib the day before the race, so I got to run the race for a greatly reduced price. So I could just review the race in relation to the price I paid, but that wouldn't be fair as most people paid 4 times what I paid. So even though I didn't pay much, the review below is based upon the full retail price of the race, $195.
I also won't be reviewing the expo as I didn't have a chance to go, this is strictly for the race.
We also need to apologize for the blurriness of some of the pictures, as I was running, well, trying to. =)
At the starting line.
Compared to other Disney races I had run, it seemed they were enforcing the corrals much more than in previous years. While this is usually a good thing, it meant that I would be starting in the very back. I was probably among the last 500 people to start the race.
The first group of runners began about 40 minutes before I would, so staying loose was a problem.
Finally at about 6:15am my race began
The race began down Disneyland Drive and then quickly turned onto the old Tram Road behind DCA's Paradise Pier and backstage behind CarsLand.
The biggest thrill of running a Disney race is the time spent running inside the parks and backstage. To say that the Avengers had the least amount of "on property" running of any Disney race I've done would be an understatement.
Below is a map of the backstage/onstage route we took for the first part of the race.
1.74 miles backstage or onstage. No running through Hollywood in DCA, no Tomorrowland at Disneyland. If you include just the "on stage" route, this amounts to only 1.2 miles, so less than 1/10th of the total race.
We entered DCA at the gate between CarsLand and BugsLand.
Running down Route 66
Obligatory bad running selfie
After leaving CarsLand we made our way down towards Mermaid and right towards Grizzly River Run.
The path inside DCA ended at Soarin'. That was all of DCA we'd be running through for this race.
After a quick trip through the Esplanade, we found ourselves backstage at Disneyland. A look at the Indiana Jones show building.
We entered Disneyland at the gate next to Splash Mountain
We proceeded to run through New Orleans Square and Frontierland on our way to Big Thunder Trail
Of course we had to run through the castle but there was no chance for individual castle pictures due to the congestion.
One of the things Disney is known for during it's races is great photo ops with the characters. I didn't notice it until I was putting together this update, but this race had a severe lack of character moments compared to the Disneyland and Tinkerbell Half Marathons.
And just like that, our run through Disneyland is over
One of the great things about running a Disney race is the awesome Disney CM's, and even better when you run into a Disney CM that you know. Hi Allison!!!! At least one of us is awake in this picture (hint, it's not me).
Allison and her CM friends made an awesome Avengers direction sign in the Esplanade. It's the little touches.
Heading to the "Exit" of Disneyland and onto the tram road that the toy story buses use.
And finally out to "Beautiful" Anaheim ... a mere 2.5 miles into the race.
I guess Target could be a part of the theme? Hulk Smash Target?
After running on Harbor Blvd, Chapman Blvd, through the parking lot of the Crystal Cathedral and Garden Grove Blvd, we found ourselves on the Santa Ana River trail.
For the next 2 miles we would run on a narrow trail, in a race with 20,000 runners.
Since it was a very windy day, the mile markers were unfortunately a casualty. Not even the Avengers could have saved them on this day.
More of the beautiful trail. Ooooh, look at all those awesome flags.
Shouldn't it be "Los Angeles Angel Stadium of Anaheim"? =)
(we all hate the name)
Getting ready to run through "The Big A"
Is it weird that I've now run through Angel Stadium 4 times and haven't seen a baseball game here since the 80's? I think so too. Need to fix that one of these days.
Back on the streets, headed back towards the resort
Nothing like a big ad on a truck to say "here's where your $195 was spent".
As we approached the resort I'd hoped that we'd get a little more running inside of the parks, but nope, just under the tunnel that goes under the Harbor entrance and backstage at DCA.
The race ended with a loop around the Paradise Pier Hotel and directly in front of the Disneyland hotel.
This here was one of the most awesome things ever as there is always a back up for pictures, even if you don't want to take one.
The winds were so strong that they had to get everybody out from around the stage and the family reunion area. Obviously people were upset, but really, there is nothing Disney could have done about the wind. It's not like the bubble that surrounds Disneyland extends to the hotel parking lots. ;)
People were still wanting to use the Port-o-Potties ... in the high winds. I don't know if you've ever been in one of these that tipped over, but I'm guessing it's not a very pleasant experience. =)
After the race I'd normally show off my medal in the parks (because I earned it) but this was as close as I'd get. =)
I finished the race in about 2:44, which isn't my best time and isn't my worst time. You don't run a Disney race to set a Personal Record, and considering we had spent 12 hours at Disneyland the day before and I was running on 2 hours of sleep (and no breakfast) I was perfectly happy with that time.
Overall, I'd have to easily say that the course for the Avengers Half was the worst for any Disney race I've run. it didn't have enough inside/backstage at the parks compared to previous races and the amount of time spent on narrow trails was ridiculous for a race with 20,000 people.
Is this race worth $195? Honestly, if I'd payed that much I would have been greatly disappointed. It will be interesting to see what course the upcoming Star Wars Half Marathon takes in January.
