Walt Disney World announced on February 24th that they are increasing their 1-Day ticket price to $99 with Multi-Day prices going up accordingly. 

Below you will find all of the prices and a few thoughts we have about the price increase.

Before we get started on our thoughts on the price increases, here is what the new prices for admission to Walt Disney World are. These prices are taken directly from the Walt Disney World website. 

Prices are per day: 
  • 1 Day/1 Park - $99 (10+) / $94 (Ages 3-9)
  • 2 Day/1 Park per day - $93 (10+) / $87.50 (Ages 3-9)
  • 3 Day/1 Park per day - $91.34 (10+) / $85 (Ages 3-9)
  • 4 Day/1 Park per day - $73.50 (10+) / $68.50 (Ages 3-9)
  • 5 Day/1 Park per day - $60.80 (10+) / $56.80 (Ages 3-9)

  • Park Hopper Option - Add $60 per ticket
  • Water Park and More Option - Add $60 per ticket
  • Park Hopper and Water Park and More Option - Add $86 per ticket

You can also look for prices for longer stays on the resort website. Those prices start at $52.34 for a 6 Day/1 Park per day ticket down to $35.40 for a 10 Day/1 Park per day ticket.

Not surprisingly, the Disney fan community is up in arms about this most recent price increase. Whether it's because people don't think the parks are worth that price anymore, there aren't enough new attractions since their last visit or simply because the other parks in Orlando are sure to follow suit. 

But if we start breaking down the tickets a bit we can see that it's not the end of the world.

Walt Disney World, unlike Disneyland, is not a 1-day resort. As much as Disneyland fans would like to dispute this fact Disneyland is a park for locals. Disneyland has approximately 19 million people living within a 100 mile radius of the park while there are only about 19 million people in the entire state of Florida. So the amount of people buying 1-day / 1-park tickets is going to be rare in Florida, unlike California. 

Instead of just focusing on the 1-day/ 1-park increase, let's look at a "typical" visit to Walt Disney World or Disneyland. While I would personally recommend 7 to 9 days in order to take in everything Walt Disney World has to offer, let's be realistic and just factor in 1 day for each of the parks. No water parks. No park hopping. We will also factor in a 4-day visit to Disneyland which is plenty of time to experience everything. 

  • Walt Disney World: Family of 4 with 2 adults and 2 children (under 9) - Total cost for tickets = $1209.84. 
  • Disneyland: Family of 4 with 2 adults and 2 children (under 9) - Total cost of the tickets = $980.

Now let's take it one step further and add in a Walt Disney World or Disneyland resort hotel for the same amount of days. All prices include hotel and park tickets (1 park per day option). 

  • Walt Disney World: Family of 4 with 2 adults and 2 children (under 9) staying at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge = $2243.00
  • Disneyland: Family of 4 with 2 adults and 2 children (under 9) staying at Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel = $2468.00 

*For reference, these are for travel dates 5/4 to 5/9. 

Instead of just looking at a snapshot of a 1-day / 1-park ticket, when you look at it from the bigger picture the price increase on an individual ticket, while shocking to look at on paper isn't something that's likely to impact your normal family traveler. When you add in the hotel it makes Walt Disney World an even better deal. I don't think anybody would dispute that Animal Kingdom Lodge is the much better option for hotel over Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel. 

Our advice, do some research, search for deals (they are out there). Obviously when considering Disneyland there are many other off-property options that have easy access to the park. Find the options that are right for you and your family prior to booking any travel.
