Six Flags Magic Mountain Update - April 8, 2025

Picture
Hey everybody, we're back today with an all new update from Six Flags Magic Mountain!

We've got some pics and video of offseason enhancements to Hurricane Harbor (there are a LOT), some general upkeep around the park, thoughts on Superman closing and possible Sky Tower reopening (rumors), and of course a look at prep for the 2026 coaster coming to the park.

Let's dive right in!

Hurricane Harbor and Park Enhancements

Picture
Let's start out here at Hurricane Harbor where the Black Snake Summit slides have gotten a pretty awesome paint job.
Picture
Can't wait to see all of the changes inside Hurricane Harbor. It's been a few years since we've visited so we'll make it a point to visit this summer.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Viper just celebrated it's 35th Anniversary so I took a nice ride on it. It seems to be running pretty well this season actually!
Picture
Just make sure you pick the right seat. =)
Picture
Inside the park there's a whole bunch of small things happening, that most people wouldn't notice. But we do! And we love it.
Picture
This former smoking section now has a sign that indicates there is no smoking allowed. As somebody with asthma who is triggered by cigarette smoke, this is amazing for me!
Picture
Not really a park improvement, but Scrambler is still sitting vacant. I doubt it comes back as even the sign has been removed.
Picture
It's a sold flat-ride spot so hopefully something will come here soon. The park is in desperate need of more flat rides.
Picture
The site is still showing as an attraction on the app, but when you click it there is no information. Hopefully that's a good sign that some kind of attraction will be coming back here soon.

Superman Closure

Picture
Let's talk about Superman. The ride announced it's permanent closure last week which didn't come as a surprise to most of us. While we wish we could have gotten some final rides, I certainly understand why it didn't reopen. It was simply cost prohibitive.
Picture
As of now the tower is remaining (I can't even imagine what it would take to bring this thing down at this point) and Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom is remaining open. Although it wasn't open during my visit.

We will be posting a tribute to Superman: The Escape and Superman: Escape from Krypton over the next few weeks. If you have any memories of Superman that you want to share, put them in the comments below and we'll include them in our update!

Sky Tower Reopening?

Obviously the pictures below are old (August of 2006 to be exact), but wanted to talk a bit about the Sky Tower. There have been a LOT of Rumors floating around that Sky Tower may be reopening at some point.

While I certainly understand that many of you never got to experience the Sky Tower and would like the opportunity to, I'm honestly not in that group (even though I've obviously been up in the Sky Tower many times over the years).
Picture
The last we heard about 10-12 years ago was that it would take $3-$4 million just to get the Sky Tower up to the California Building code for public opening. Imagine how much more that would be in 2025. Especially now.
Picture
While these views are fantastic, capacity is low, ridership would be low after the first few weeks. There is a reason it shut down in the first place.
Picture
Wow, this corner of the park sure looks different than 19 years ago.

Personally, I would rather that $5 million or so be spent on overall park improvement.

I mentioned in our update video that there were probably 100 things I'd spend that money on other than the Sky Tower. It's probably not 100, but here are a couple I'd love to see happen ...
  • Repaving all of the walkways around the park
    • if you've ever tried to push a wheelchair at SFMM you'll know what I'm talking about
  • New trains and paint for Gold Rusher
    • give the classic new life and get the height requirement back to 42" creating a true family coaster
Picture
Picture
Fully expect this to be redone with Project 2026

Project 2026

Picture
Speaking of Project 2026, lots more earth is getting moved around.
Picture
Some of the seats for the Golden Bear Theater are still there, but it looks like they're chipping away at it. Literally.
Picture
Can we also hope that Full Throttle gets a more permanent looking station with this addition? Maybe they'll finally finish it? (I'm joking ... kind of)

Wrath of Rakshasa Construction Tour at Six Flags Great America

Picture
Happy Friday Everybody and welcome to our first coaster construction tour since ... honestly, I can't even remember the last time we had a coaster construction tour. And we are SO excited to bring you a look at the upcoming Wrath of Rakshasa at Six Flags Great America.

We had Scott out at the park yesterday to learn more about the new coaster and get some amazing pics of the coaster itself. We hope you enjoy and we can't wait to see this amazing looking coaster in action later on this year.
Picture
Let's start with some coaster pieces waiting to be installed. They've made some great progress over the winter.
Picture
Picture
Picture
In addition to the coaster, they have moved the ticket booths back to the old security and metal detectors, and opened up more of the entrance to the park.
Picture
Still an amazing park reveal, along with it's sister park in Santa Clara.
Picture
An interesting tidbit learned during the tour is that Dr. Diabolical's Cliffhanger was originally slated and designed for Six Flags Great America, and in the same spot. They then decided they wanted a taller more intense dive coaster with more inversions so sent that coaster to Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

Hi Scott! Thanks for the awesome coverage!
Picture
Picture
Another reason for the change and sending Dr. Diabolical's Cliffhanger to Six Flags Fiesta Texas is that they wanted more guest interaction over pathways and the midway. Something that Six Flags Great America does not currently have. We absolutely love this trend of being able to see more coasters and them not just being backstage all the time.

The biggest and deepest footers are not where you would expect them (like the lift or drop). They are actually on the last few turns at the end of the ride. The biggest footers are 6 feet wide and 90 feet deep.

Hi Demon, we see you back there.

Hi Batman and Goliath. We see you back there.

As you can see, work is going on feverishly at the park, with lots of installation still to come.

Let's head inside for a close up look of the trains. These have the same set-up as the previously mentioned Dr. Diabolical's Cliffhanger, with a "true" center seat.

Nerd Shot #4. Let's be honest, every picture in this update is a nerd shot. And we love it.

Heading back outside for a few more pics. You can see how it dominates the center of the park now. Which is awesome.

Picture
Three B&M's will kind of tower over this area of the park now. And that's not a bad thing at all. There's not too many B&M models this park is missing at this point.

A look at the station area

Alright, that's going to wrap it up for our tour. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. It's never lost on us how much of a privilege it is to be included in such things. Thanks to Six Flags Great America and Tony Clark (that's so weird to type out) for having us out. Hope to see you again soon!
